Repent is the English translation of the Greek μετανοέω.
The Blue Letter Bible defines μετανοέω as:
1. To change one's mind, that is, to repent.
2. To change one's mind for the better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one's past sins; it involves a turning with contrition from sin to God; the repentant sinner is in the proper condition to accept Divine forgiveness.
