NATIONAL ATHEIST'S DAY

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) says that it is a non-partisan, non-profit organization, whose stated mission is to defend and preserve the individual's rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the U.S. Constitution. However, perhaps a better name for it would be "Atheists Conspiring to Limit Us." What began, in 1920, as an organization of lawyers defending the rights of individuals being oppressed by the U.S. Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, whose "Palmer Raids" gathered up suspected subversives thought to be communist sympathizers, took only five years to become focused on silencing organized religion. Well, that is not entirely true. They have no problem with Kwanzaa celebrations, Krishna, Muslim Law, etc., but appear to oppose only Christian and Jewish activities.

In 1925, the ACLU, desiring to challenge Tennessee's law banning the teaching of evolution in its schools, recruited biology teacher John T. Scopes to challenge the law. The result? Today, it is against the law to teach Creation in the schools, and evolution has become "scientific fact!" Today, they are more than eager to stand against any mention of God on government buildings, in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag, and, if they had their way, religious broadcasting would be prohibited, period!

Therefore, I believe it is high time America rewards their zeal to eliminate any public mention of Christian and Jewish beliefs; some even calling the reading of the Bible "hate speech." I propose April First of each year be declared a national holiday known as National Atheist's Day. Businesses should shut down, schools should be closed, and atheists nationwide should be saluted for worshiping nothing (except perhaps themselves). Why do I suggest this? Please forgive me for using the Bible as the basis for something that appears to be promoting atheism, but it certainly seems appropriate in this case.

The Word of God (sorry again), has this to say about folks who do not believe in the existence of the One who brought them into existence:

Psalm 14:1 - "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good."

Psalm 53:1 - "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good."

You might question my being willing to quote these verses while seeming to ignore the Lord's admonition to avoid calling a brother a fool (Matt. 5:22), but the verse does not warn against calling oneself a fool. Forty years ago, having had any semblance of faith crushed by a liberal arts education, I was an atheist. I not only did not believe a God existed, I rigorously campaigned against the lunacy of others, who I saw as being controlled by a governmental use of religion. Karl Marx called religion the "opiate of the masses," meaning that it was a myth used to subjugate or control the people. That made total sense to me until I met Jesus. Now, looking back, I can call myself nothing else but a fool! I probably would have enjoyed National Atheist's Day, had there been one.
