Does that mean that the Law was inadequate to save us? Yes! Galatians 3:22-26 teaches us that the Law was given to point out man's need due to the fact man is unable to keep the whole Law:
"But the Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the Law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus."
No, religion cannot make man good enough to be considered holy by God; just the opposite, religion, all religion, points out that we all fail to achieve righteousness (holy perfection): "I will declare thy righteousness, and thy works; for they shall not profit thee" (Isa. 57:12). Paul wrote: "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified" (Gal. 2:16).
