WHOM DID JESUS SAY HE IS?

JOHN 13:1-19

[1] Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour was come that He should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them unto the end.
[2] And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him;
[3] Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He was come from God, and went to God;
[4] He rose from supper, and laid aside His garments; and took a towel, and girded Himself.
[5] After that He poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded.
[6] Then came He to Simon Peter:  and Peter said unto Him, Lord, do You wash my feet?
[7] Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter.
[8] Peter said unto Him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you have no part with Me.
[9] Simon Peter said unto Him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
[10] Jesus said to him, He that is washed needs not save (only) to wash his feet, but is clean every whit:  and you are clean, but not all.
[11] For He knew who should betray Him; therefore said He, You are not all clean.
[12] So after He had washed their feet, and had taken His garments, and was set down again, He said unto them, Do you know what I have done to you?
[13] You call Me MASTER and LORD: and you say well; for so I AM.
[14] If I then, your LORD and MASTER, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet.
[15] For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
[16] Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
[17] If you know these things, happy are you if you do them.
[18] I speak not of you all:  I know whom I have chosen:  but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.
[19] Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, you may believe that I AM He.

NOTES:

In verses 13 and 14, Jesus acknowledges that He is both LORD AND MASTER; it is interesting that Jesus does not mention SAVIOUR; a word that appears only 24 times in the KJV New Testament, while LORD appears 667 times!  Something to think about!

Also, I believe the context of verses 13 and 19 indicated that He was identifying Himself as the I AM of Exodus:

Exodus 3:14-15 - And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM:  and He said, Thus shall you say unto the children of Israel, I AM has sent me unto you.  And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shall you say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me unto you:  this is My name forever, and this is My memorial unto all generations.

In Exodus 3:14, THAT is not in the Hebrew texts.  And in John 13:19, the He is not in the Greek manuscripts.  There are other places in the Gospel of John where this same wording appears:

John 8:24, 28, 58 - I said therefore unto you, that you shall die in your sins:  for if you believe not that I AM He, you shall die in your sins. . . . Then said Jesus unto them, When you have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know that I AM He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father has taught Me, I speak these things. . . .  Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM.

John 18:5-6 - They answered Him, Jesus of Nazareth.  Jesus said unto them, I AM He.  And Judas also, which betrayed Him, stood with them.  As soon then as He had said unto them, I AM He, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

THE FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST THAT SAVES,
MUST BE BASED ON THE JESUS CHRIST
AS HE IS PRESENTED IN GOD'S WORD; NOT
IN THE JESUS OF SOME RELIGIOUS CREED!
