TITUS 2:11-15 (WITH COMMENTARY)

TITUS 2:11-15

"For the grace of God
(His unmerited favor - Eph. 2:8-9)
that bringeth salvation
(the gift of His Son as an atonement for our sin - Jn. 3:14-17)
hath appeared to all men
(young, old, men, women, boss, employee, etc. - Titus 2:1-10),
teaching us
(by faith in Christ, we have received the Teacher, the Holy Spirit - Jn. 16:7-15),
that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts
(thinking like Jesus - Rom. 12:2; Phil. 2:5),
we should live soberly
(being of a sound mind, vigilant, focused - Rom. 12:3; 1 Pet. 5:8),
righteously and godly
(doing the right thing according to God's Word - 2 Tim. 3:16),
in this present world
 (don't waste the time God has given you - Eph. 5:15-16; Col. 4:5);
looking for that blessed hope
(the return of Christ - 1 Thes. 2:19; 1 Tim. 1:1),
and the glorious appearing
(when He shall appear, we shall be like Him - 1 Jn. 3:2)
of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ
(He is both - Titus 3:4; Jude 1:25);
Who gave Himself for us
(He was in agreement with His Father - Jn. 3:14-17; 10:11-18),
that He might redeem us from all iniquity
(He came with a purpose - 1 Cor. 6:20; 7:23),
and purify unto Himself a peculiar people
(Acts 15:8-9; Heb. 9:11-14; 1 Pet. 2:9),
zealous of good works
(we are saved to do good works - Rom. 8:29; Eph. 2:10; Phil. 2:13).
These things speak
(do and pass on - Phil. 4:9; 2 Tim. 2:2),
and exhort
(the same root as "Comforter" - parakaleō - comfort and encourage),
and rebuke
(to correct as God corrects, in love - 1 Tim. 5:20; Rev. 3:19)
with all authority
(while Jesus is in heaven, we have authority - Mk. 13:34).
Let no man despise thee"
(Rom. 12:18; 14:19; Heb. 12:14).
