THAT IT MIGHT BE FULFILLED

THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW:  JESUS IS THE PROMISED MESSIAH

The Book of Matthew was written primarily to present Jesus Christ as Israel's long-awaited Messiah.  It begins with His genealogy (1:1-17) showing that He was in the lineage of Abraham and David.  The genealogy is not meant to list every generation, but rather to show that Joseph, while not His father, was legally a member of the family of David.  Luke's Gospel serves to show that Mary, like Joseph, was "qualified" to produce the Messiah (Lk. 2:23-38).  Notice that Matthew's genealogy says Joseph was married to the mother of Jesus, and does not claim that he is His father (Mt. 1:16), while Luke's Gospel actually uses the words "being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph."  The following verses contain the phrase "that it might be fulfilled," a phrase only found in Matthew's Gospel:

Matthew 1:22-23 - Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." [Isaiah 7:14]

Matthew 2:14-15 - When (Joseph) arose, he took the young child and His mother by night, and departed into Egypt:  and was there until the death of Herod:  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt have I called My son." [Hosea 11:1]

Matthew 2:21-23 - And (Joseph) arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.  But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither:  notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:  and he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth:  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, "He shall be called a Nazarene." [Isaiah 11:1]

Matthew 4:13-16 - And leaving Nazareth, (Jesus) came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, "The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; the people which sat in darkness saw Great Light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up." [Isaiah 42:6-7]

Matthew 8:16-17 - When the even was come, they brought unto Him many that were possessed with devils:  and He cast out the spirits with His Word, and healed all that were sick:  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, "Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses." [Isaiah 53:4]

Matthew 12:16-18 - And (Jesus) charged them that they should not make Him known:  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, "Behold My Servant, Whom I have chosen; My Beloved, in Whom My soul is well pleased:  I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall show judgment to the Gentiles." [Isaiah 42:1-4]

Matthew 13:34-35 - All these things spoke Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spoke He not unto them:  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, "I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world." [Psalm 78:2]

Matthew 21:2-5 - Saying unto them, "Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.  And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them."  All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, "Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass." [Zechariah 9:9]

Matthew 27:33-35 - And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, they gave Him vinegar to drink mingled with gall:  and when He had tasted thereof, He would not drink.  And they crucified Him, and parted His garments, casting lots:  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, "They parted My garments among them, and upon My vesture did they cast lots." [Psalm 69:21]

JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED FOR OUR SINS, HE WAS BURIED,
AND HE WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD, ALL
ACCORDING TO THE PROPHETIC SCRIPTURES!
HE OFFERS SALVATION TO ALL WHO WILL TRUST IN HIM!
