THE BIBLE HAS A LOT TO SAY ABOUT HELL
To begin, the words translated "hell" in the King James Version of the Bible are as follows:
1. - שְׁאוֹל (shĕ'owl or sheol) - is translated "hell" 31 times, but it is also translated "grave" 31 times!
2. - γέεννα (géenna or gehenna) - is translated "hell" 12 times, including 3 times in combination with πῦρ (pyr), which is translated "fire" or "fiery" 73 times.
3. - ᾅδης (háidēs or hades) - is translated "hell" 10 times, and "grave" once.
4. - ταρταρόω (tartaróō or tar-tar-o'-o) - appears as "hell" only in 2 Peter 2:4.
HELL IS A PLACE OF TORMENT
Luke 16:19-31 - There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeing Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime received thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou would send him to my father's house: for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
FROM THE FIRE OF HELL TO THE ETERNAL LAKE OF FIRE
Revelation 14:9-11 - And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of His indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: and the smoke of their torment ascends up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receives the mark of his name.
Revelation 20:10-15 - And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
WHY WOULD THE LOVING GOD SEND PEOPLE TO HELL?
The answer is, He doesn't! We are told in 2 Peter 3:9, that God does not want anyone to perish! He demonstrated His love for mankind by sending His Only Begotten Son to die for the sins of the world (Jn. 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 1 Cor. 15:3-4; 1 Tim. 2:3-4; 1 Jn. 2:2; etc.)! People send themselves to hell by refusing God's free gift of salvation (Rom. 5:15-18; Eph. 2:8; etc.)!
