ARMAGEDDON: THE END OF THE WORLD?

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!  Can you imagine allowing a first year medical student to do a heart transplant on you child?  Or a first grader to do your taxes?  Of course not!  And yet, millions choose to base their knowledge of God on the opinions of people like Oprah, or Shirley McClain, or, believe it or not, even the Beetles!  It is bad enough that television and radio bombard the airways with false teachers who not only distort the Gospel, but deliberately do so to live in huge mansions, and buy private jets.  And yet, the Creator, Who became flesh, had no place to lay His head (Jn. 1:1-3, 14; Lk. 9:58).

Another source of distorted truth, over the past several years, has been the motion pictures centered around the Battle of Armageddon and the end of the world. Armageddon is the English translation of the Greek word Ἀρμαγεδδών (Harmagedon), from the Hebrew origin of two words:  הַר (har) and מְגִדּוֹן (Megiddown), "the hill of Megiddo, a place of gathering."  It is mentioned in Revelation 16:13-17 which reads:

"And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon (Satan), and out of the mouth of the beast (Antichrist), and out of the mouth of the false prophet.  For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.  Behold, I come as a thief.  Blessed is he that watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.  And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.  And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done."

While this passage is in Chapter Sixteen, it is clear from Jesus speaking (in red), that the battle will end when He returns!  That happens in Revelation 19:11-22.  So, is the Battle of Armageddon the end of the world?  Not hardly!  Chapter Twenty tells of Christ's 1000 year earthly kingdom known as the Millennium, followed by the Great White Throne Judgment where all whose names are not written in the Lamb's Book of Life, are sentenced to the Lake of Fire!  THEN, the world ends, right?  Well, sort of; it will be replaced according to Revelation 21:1 and 2 Peter 3:10-13; Peter wrote:

"But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.  Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?  Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for New Heavens and a New Earth, wherein dwells righteousness."
