Today, I am doing a Bible study on the word "likeness." It appears thirty-eight times in the King James Bible. Sixteen of those are from the Hebrew word דְּמוּת (dĕmuwth). They are found in Genesis 1:26; 5:1, 3; Isaiah 40:18; and Ezekiel 1:5, 10, 13, 16, 22, 26, 28; 8:2; 10:1, 10, 21, 22. It is also translated: "similitude," "like," "manner," and "fashion." "Likeness," in the New Testament (Greek), is from the word ὁμοίωμα (homoiōma). It appears in Acts 1:4, 11; Romans 6:5; 8:3; and Philippians 2:7. It is also translated "similitude," and "shape." Only two verses in the entire Bible refer to something that is made in the likeness of God; they are:
Genesis 1:26 - "And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."
Genesis 5:1-2 - "This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made He him; male and female created He them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created." [Note: This is describing the original creation of Adam and Eve; it is not saying they still have the likeness of God.]
I believe that when God told Adam that the day he ate of the forbidden fruit, he would die, he did die! The Bible is clear that Adam died spiritually. That is why Jesus said we must be born again; He was referring to being born again spiritually! He said, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water (physically) AND of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again" (John 3:5-7)! In God's mind, those who trust in His Son are already "born again"; we are His children. However, apparently, we will not be in God's likeness until Christ comes for us. These verses clearly indicate this:
Psalm 17:15 - "As for me, I will behold Thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness."
1 John 3:2 - "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is."
So, the answer to the opening question is: humans who were created in the image AND likeness of God! I hope you didn't cheat. LOL God bless you!
